I'm aware of these criticisms of Stalin and they are worthy of discussion. However, I don't think Roberts is basing his views on Stalin on repeating pro-Stalin myths as you put it. He explicitly said in the interview that it was based on his reading of the historical record, especially access to the Soviet/Russian archives.
